Synopsis

Heart of Snow: afterlife is resonant with Exile trilogy, three feature-length documentaries including the first Heart of Snow, Heart of Blood. It traces Koryo people(ethnic Koreans in Central Asia and Russia). Heart of Snow: afterlife captures the scenes of genocide in Vladivostok, Russia in the 1920s as well as the aftermath of traumatic mass deportation of ethnic minorities to Central Asia. In this trajectory, one encounters Alexandra Petrovna Kim, a Korean revolutionary political activist who joined the Bolsheviks in 1916. She is known as the first Korean communists in Russia.

Director's Statement

The year 1937, when deportation of Koryo people was committed by Stalin regime, is important for the understanding of history and culture of Koryo diaspora. Koryo people started move to far east Russia since 1860. In this film, Heart of Snow: afterlife, I look back the life of Koryo people in the 1910~1920s and some parts of current life. Alexandra Petrovna Kim, Korean female socialist in Russia, was executed after the revolution, and Shin-han Village Massacre occurred in Vladivostok. This film is about the tragic history of Koryo people, represented by two North Korean defectors, Kuk-in Choi and Jonghoon Kim, and Haklim Kae, the son of Korean independence activist. All their presence and absence bring back the memories of historical incidents.
