Synopsis

This is an extraordinary, impressionistic anti-war film centered on Italian/Austrian war zone during the First World War, in which Italy fought on the side of the Allies and the empire of Austria/Hungary fought on the side of Germany. We see the war from the perceptions of a dead soldier who has fallen on the battlefield. The film is based upon the diaries and letters of the troops from both sides.

 

Biography

Angela Ricci Lucchi
Yervant Gianikian (born to Armenian parents in 1942) studied architecture in Venice; Angela Ricci-Lucchi (born in Lugo di Romagna) studied painting in Austria with Oskar Kokoschka. Settling in Milan, they have devoted their activities to the cinema since the mid-seventies, first with their performance screenings of , then with their artisanal re-working of the old films of their collection which they tinted, toned, step-printed and reedited - as they did, for example, in with footage shot by pioneer Luca Comerio. Working like archeologists with film stock, ideologies and culture, they have developed a cinema which is not only narrative and poetry but also critique and analysis of the recycled footage.
